What the heck is compound interest?

It's the reason a little bit of art money today can turn into a LOT of money later. Let's build a snowball. ❄️

Imagine you sell a drawing for $10. You don't spend it (nice). You put it somewhere it can grow — like a savings or retirement account.

Now imagine that $10 grows into $11. That extra $1 is interest: money your money made while you were busy drawing your next masterpiece.

Here's the magic part. The next year, you don't just earn interest on your $10 — you earn it on your $11. And then on that bigger number. And then on that. Your money starts making money, and then that money makes money too.

It's a snowball

Roll a tiny snowball down a big hill. At the top, it's the size of your fist. Halfway down, it's the size of a beach ball. At the bottom? Watch out. 🎳

Compound interest works the same way. It starts small and boring, then gets huge — because it's growing on top of itself. That's why people call it the eighth wonder of the world. (Okay, grown-ups call it that. But they're right.)

Time is the real superpower

The biggest advantage you have as a kid isn't how much money you make. It's how much time it gets to grow. Check this out:

If you start at age… Total you put in ($50/mo) Could grow to*
10 $33,000 ~$390,000
20 $27,000 ~$190,000
30 $21,000 ~$90,000

Nobody put in more money than you. Starting ten years earlier is worth about $200,000 more. Time does the heavy lifting.

But wait — I'm a kid. How do I earn money?

That's the fun part. You already do — if you make art! Selling a drawing, a print, or a digital license counts as real income. Grown-ups call it "earned income," and it's exactly what lets you open a retirement account (yes, even at your age).

So every piece you sell isn't just a sale. It's a snowball. Some of what you earn can go into an account that grows and grows until you're a grandparent. Then you can tell your grandkids you started at ten. 😎

The one-line version

Money that grows makes more money grow — and starting early beats earning more, almost every time.

See it for yourself

Slide the buttons in the retirement calculator and watch the numbers explode. Try changing your age — you'll see what a difference a few years makes.
